Samhain. Halloween. My favourite time of year. It's time for carved pumpkins, clocks rolling back, and the creeping darkness embracing the shortening days. More importantly, the veil between worlds has thinned as the world around us dies and rests. The bare branches and fallen leaves give us reminder to honour and connect not just with our dead loved ones and ancestors, but with death as an important part of life's cycle.

Initially, I was going to incorporate heavier rock tracks into this playlist, and give it higher energy levels, however quickly realised the lack of partying and socialising this year meant a more relaxed track selection would be more appropriate. I've put gentle tracks like Wallowa Lake Monster Sufjan Stevens alongside more upbeat selections such as Engel by Rammstein to balance festivity with contemplation.

I've made sure to include plenty of thematic spooky songs, such as Baby You're a Haunted House by Gerard Way, and the iconic goth anthem Bela Lugosi's Dead by Bauhaus. Satan's a Woman by Twin Temple brings energy and celebration of our power and our darker sides, whilst Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) by cherished David Bowie is both atmospheric and contemplative.

More solemn songs like the haunting Desert Song by My Chemical Romance and Six Feet Down Under by Frank Iero and The Future Violents meditate on death and our own mortality whilst View from Heaven by Yellowcard and The '59 Sound by The Gaslight Anthem reflect on our lost loved ones and grief. It's no secret that I think examining our thoughts towards death, mortality, and grief is incredibly important, and Samhain is an ideal time for this.

Naturally, I couldn't resist adding AURORA's latest offering, Thank U, which is as poetic and beautiful as we've come to expect from her, with themes perfect for this time of year. I've also included instrumental tracks Dark Waters by Celestial Aeon Project and Vampires by Bat for Lashes, both of which set a wonderfully eerie atmosphere.
